Restaurant Review: Mangia e Scappa Italian Foods – Fort Langley, BC

Hey Guys!

If you follow me on social media, you would know that I confessed that I had felt uninspired by what I was doing with this space. So I decided to reinvent what I do here.

I love to write, whether anyone reads it or not, so I knew the blog part of Miss Delish would stay. I just felt like I wasn’t excited to come up with new recipes, it was getting to the point where it was becoming a chore to figure out what I could make next, which made me not want to do it at all. Also, the ads that were on the site were driving me nuts, so they’re gone! Now you can browse without being bombarded by tampon advertisements.

What I post here is still going to be a mix of a lot of things, but I am going to begin focusing more on Restaurant Reviews. We go out to eat a lot. I love trying new restaurants and checking out new places in our area and beyond. So I figured why not share that with you all! I always check out reviews before trying out a new place. Eating out can be expensive and besides that, it is a treat that usually we can only indulge in every now and then. So if you’re going to go out and spend the time and money, you want to make sure you’re going somewhere good! Hopefully I can help with that.

Don’t you worry, I will still post recipes here every now and then, but they will be recipes that I am excited to share with you, and ones I have put a lot of thought and effort into.

Quality over quantity, people.

ANYWAYS. That was kind of exhausting.

Let’s get on to the good stuff, shall we? Fort Langley is a cute little area and it has been that way for a long while, but recently there are a lot of new businesses opening up and changing up the look and feel of the old time-y town. Mangia e Scappa has been in Fort Langley for a while now, but they recently moved from a small location on the main drag, to what I think was an auto repair shop. It’s quite a large space and a section of it is a marketplace, selling Italian foods. They kept the garage doors, which gives it an industrial feel, but the decor is like an old school Italian cafe.

Mangia e Scappa offers, salads, small plates, quite a large range of wood fired pizzas as well as a handful of house made pasta dishes and then a few specials each day. Their beer and wine menu is limited to Italian origin only, which I thought was a nice touch! Our waitress was very friendly and helpful, and offered up her suggestion when I asked which glass of red to get. I ended up with the Sangiovese on their menu, and it was really nice. I would have liked the Chianti but it was offered by the bottle only and I wasn’t feeling that brazen…Chris got a Morretti which is an Italian beer (they also offer Peroni in case you were wondering.)

We weren’t feeling incredibly hungry, so we didn’t order any appetizers, we skipped right to entrees. My choice was the pasta special of the day. It was Fettuccine with Smoked Salmon, Capers and Red Onion in Rose Sauce.

It was really delicious. The homemade fettuccine was cooked perfectly and the rose sauce was nice and silky. The briney capers were the perfect contrast to the rich sauce.

Chris went for the Gnocchi, which comes as no surprise whatsoever, Gnocchi is his favorite food in the world. This one is a regular item on the menu and comes in a cream sauce with prosciutto, gorgonzola and walnuts.

This dish was also very good, the gnocchi was perfectly pillowy and the portion wasn’t overwhelming. I thought the presentation on this one was really beautiful.

Of course we had to have coffee and dessert. I noticed they had a cute little coffee bar off to the side so we went with some espresso drinks. I had just a regular shot of espresso and Chris ordered a cappuccino. For dessert we ordered the Tiramisu.

Both of our coffees were great and the tiramisu was the perfect ending to a lovely meal.

They offer quite a few other full size desserts and then they also have some smaller bites like biscotti and cannoli from their pastry case. It seemed like during the day time this place would be more like a little market/deli counter. You could pick up your italian pantry staples and then a fresh made dessert to take home.

Our bill came to almost an even $70.00 which I thought was more than reasonable for drinks, dinner and dessert for two. Mangia e Scappa has great service, wonderful handmade food and a relaxed and casual atmosphere.

We will definitely be back to try the pizzas!

Restaurant Review: Point No Point Resort Vancouver Island, British Columbia

Hello sweet people!

I hope you are all having a wonderful Wednesday so far! I have an awesome restaurant review that I wanted to share with you today.

Point no Point Resort is a gorgeous west coast style retreat situated about 45 minutes outside of Victoria, BC. It’s actually only 25 km (16 miles) outside of the town of Sooke, if anyone happens to know where that is! The resort features 25 beautiful cabins perched on the side of a cliff that overlook the Pacific.

Each cabin is kind of decorated in it’s own style but they all have that cozy west coast log cabin feel and breathtaking ocean views. It’s the perfect place for a romantic getaway!

I sound like an infomercial but I just really, really, like this place.

We didn’t stay at the resort this time but we DID eat at their fab restaurant. We stopped there once on the way back from our camping trip and since then we have decided to make it a yearly trip.

First of all I just want to show you the view from our table because it was just gosh darn ridiculous.

The best part is, the view doesn’t overshadow the food!

When you walk into the restaurant it almost seems like you’re in someones living room. they have a fireplace and a couch and it seems slightly dark, though totally quaint. Then you’re led out into one of two sun rooms. Both rooms have beautiful views, no matter what table you are seated at. The dining area is so bright and airy I couldn’t even handle it. I’m a big fan of bright and airy.

I also want to make a point of saying that they do an amazing job of keeping this place neat and tidy, the buildings are on the old side but they keep them in amazing shape and everything is clean as a whistle. I am the type of person to look around and see if the floors are dirty, or the bathroom needs cleaning and I could honestly not say anything negative about this place in that aspect.

Okay, on to the most important part, the food!

We we’re just there for lunch and I wasn’t starving so I passed on an appetizer. Mr. Delish ordered a bowl of their Creamy Seafood Chowder ($7) and of course I’m a ding dong and didn’t get a photo of it. It was thick and creamy and loaded with seafood and fresh veggies. It also came with a little bread basket. The waitress was so kind to offer an extra spoon so I could get in on some of the chowder. I think he was shooting her the evil eye after that one (jokes!) It was super tasty and I believe they have the chowder on the menu every day and they also switch up a soup of the day (tomato and roasted chickpea on the day we were there.)

Then we ordered our mains! Mr. Delish decided on the “Confit of Chicken Leg” ($15) which was served on top of greens along with confit of tomato, basil and mozzarella.

It was delicious. The chicken was cooked perfectly, crisp skin and fall off the bone meat. The tomato, basil, mozzarella concoction was delicious. He ended up pulling the chicken off the bone and mixing it all together like a salad. It was more than enough for him to eat and he thoroughly enjoyed it.

Then for my main, I ordered the “Marinated BC Salmon” ($15) which was also served on a bed of fresh greens along with Israeli cous cous, pickled beets, shallots and an orange vinaigrette.

Oh man.

I would give my left arm to have this magically appear on my desk right now. Seriously.

The salmon was cooked perfectly, flaky but juicy and tender, and super flavorful. The cous cous and beets were an awesome combination and I am going to try make something like it at home. Dang good is what that is.

We finished off our lunch with tea and we just had to order a creme brulee ($7), which we ordered before when we were there and we loved it! I can honestly say this is one of the few places that makes a proper creme brulee. Of course I ate it before I remembered forgot to take a photo.

Just a note: the menu online which can be found HERE is possibly outdated. It seems like they have a lot of similar dishes but they switch it up with more seasonal ingredients.

All in all, this place is fantastic and I think you all would love it to bits! So if you ever find yourself on Vancouver island, please, pullleaaseee check it out!

Romantic Valentines Dinner {Cielo’s} White Rock

Good morning lovelies! I hope you all are having an amazing week so far.

Me? Meh. Things are kinda boring so far, definitely looking forward to the weekend. I know, I know it’s only Wednesday.

I’m doomed.

My last weekend was so busy that I actually needed to come back to work to get a bit of a break!

Friday night Mr. Delish and I went to dinner for Valentines day (which I will tell you about in a minute.)

Then Saturday, I went shopping with Tascha at Metrotown, which was kind of a nightmare. We were there for upwards of 4 hours and barely bought anything. In the end our feet were so sore from walking around all day, we barely made it to the car.

Later that night we went out with some friends for Tascha’s birthday.

Then finally, Sunday I woke up early to make Chocolate Pots for a family dinner and then we finished off the weekend with the Canucks/Blues game.

Phew.

Anyways back to Friday night. As I mentioned, we had reservations at Cielo’s for Valentines day. I was super stoked because I love that place and it’s just one of those restaurants I always forget about when planning dinner out.

I did however, plan out my outfit, as I always do! I wore a gold sequined high waisted skirt, with a white tee and black blazer. I paired that with some black suede wedges. It was a super cute outfit, unfortunately, the skirt and shoe combo made it impossible for me to walk properly. The skirt cut my typical leg range of motion in half. So I kind of had to shuffle, then the shoes are really high and tippy, so they made things even more interesting. The walk from our car took double the time. Mr. Delish kept looking over and saying “are you okay?”

Like “ya, I’m fine just traipsing around on these cobblestones, TOTALLY fine”

THEN when we finally got into the restaurant, I realized that the tables are all bar height, and so were the chairs!

Dun, dun, dunnnnnn….

I tried to be as graceful as possible when I got up on the seat but I’m sure I looked like a hot mess.

I’m never wearing that skirt/shoe combo again.

I didn’t take any pictures because it was VERY dark in the restaurant and they would have turned out horribly. However, I did want to do a restaurant review, so I will just quickly reiterate what we had.

So basically it is a tapas bar, so they have lots of small plates. Now, one thing you have to know about Cielo’s is the plates are not typical tapas size, most of them are ginormous. We ordered 4 dishes to share but we definitely could have gotten away with 3.

We started out with the bruschetta:

“gorgonzola basted, pesto rub, house dried roma tomato drizzle, balsamic reduction”

In a word, amazing! This is definitely the must order dish on their menu. They do a blend of cream cheese, goat cheese and gorgonzola and they definitely don’t skimp on the cheese! Then it has the pesto, tomato and balsamic all over it. And like everything else, the portion is big, you get like half a baguette! Yum.

Then we had the Marinated Tiger Prawns:

“fragrant mix of lemon, fresh herbs and spices.”

These were really good. They are served cold and marinated in lemon, oil and herbs and spices like the description says. To be honest, I am not sure if I would order them again just because there are better things on the menu.

Next we had the Haida Indian Candy Salmon:

“brown sugar cured and pepper bathed, served atop frizzled onions, red pepper jelly dipping sauce.”

Mr. Delish LOVES smoked salmon, and if you haven’t had candied salmon, it is amazing. If you like the whole sweet and salty combo, it’s definitely something you would enjoy. They also stack them up like lincoln logs, just what I like in my meal :)

Lastly, we had a pot of their famous mussels, we ordered the curry style ones:

“sweet curry, garam masala, white wine sauce.”

They also have a white wine and herb style as well as Cajun chorizo style. We loved the ones we got. The curry really stood up to the bold taste of the mussels. I would say this was my favorite dish of the night. I liked it even more than the bruschetta!

We finished our dinner with their delicious Creme Brulee Boat. Yum!

All in all, it was a fabulous dinner as usual, Cielo’s has a wonderful atmosphere, it’s so nice and cozy! The service was excellent and we will be back again!

Spaghetti Quattro

Good morning everyone, Happy Friday!

What does everyone have planned for the weekend? All the Canadians had a long weekend last weekend and now its the American’s turn to have their long weekend. I hope everyone has a fun and safe time!

A few months back, Mr. Delish and I went to this delicious Italian Restaurant in Vancouver called Quattro. They have another location as well named Q4. Chris is not big on going to Italian restaurants because his family is Italian and I guess he is always judging the restaurants food against the food his family makes and it usually doesn’t measure up. In this case though, the food ended up being great.

For our pasta course, we ordered their specialty which is called Spaghetti Quattro. It seemed simple, spaghetti in a light tomato sauce with ground chicken, black beans, garlic, parsley and red pepper flakes.I thought, okay so whats the big deal? When I tried it I knew, it was the perfect mix of simple flavors, and I was determined to recreate it at home.

Turns out I didn’t really have to work all that hard because they posted their recipe online. Duh! I tried it the way they make it and it was great but I decided to make a few changes to it to suit my tastes and I liked it even more.

This is now on the permanent dinner rotation. I love that it is simple and quick to make, but also fairly healthy.

Spaghetti Quattro

Serves 4 as a main course

(lightly modified from Quattro’s Recipe)

1 lb spaghetti

1 lb ground turkey

3/4 cup olive oil

1/4 cup chopped parsley

2 cloves minced garlic

1 tbsp red pepper flakes

1 (16 oz) can black beans, rinsed and drained

1/2 cup tomato sauce

1 tbsp kosher salt

1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

 

Cook the spaghetti to al dente in salted boiling water as per the package directions.

While the pasta is cooking. Brown the ground turkey in a large non stick pan over medium high heat, making sure to break the turkey meat into small pieces with a wooden spoon as you go. Once the turkey is cooked, remove to a plate and set aside for a minute.

Add the olive oil to the pan and allow to get hot (but not smoking) add the parsley and cook for about 30 seconds to a minute, until crispy but not browned. Add the garlic and red pepper flakes and cook for another 30 seconds, stirring constantly. Add in the cooked turkey meat, black beans, tomato sauce and salt. Stir and cook for about 2 mins.

Toss the cooked pasta with the sauce and serve. Top each plate with a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese.
