My Recipe to Riches Journey: Updated!

18 Oct

Sighhhhhhhhhhh

That was me breathing a sigh of relief now that the show has aired.

As many of you already know, I was chosen to be a finalist on Recipe to Riches Season 2! I wrote about my journey up until the point of being able to announce it to the public, here.

At that time, they had just announced when the show was airing and the names of the contestants and their recipes. Although I was able to tell you all about my experience with auditions and then filming, I still couldn’t divulge any information about the outcome of the show, which was the most stressful part!

Every time I would think about watching the show I would get butterflies and get all crazy and jittery! Then I would think about how I was going to need about 6 or 15 glasses of wine and maybe to have someone physically restrain me, just to get through watching the show.

I hope that I am not alone in feeling this way, but I absolutely hate seeing or hearing myself on TV. The filming was honestly not bad at all, considering I’m totally that person that acts like a total goof on camera, but then gets incredibly embarrassed later when I have to see it played back.

When I initially was able to announce I would be on the show, everyone wanted to have a big viewing party and invite every person I know, which I agreed to at first and then got super shy and decided I just wanted to have a small intimate gathering. I invited a few of my good friends as well as my aunt and of course, my parents and sister. My little sister Jessi had to watch in Victoria with her roommates since she is currently away at University.

My Mom made Pioneer Woman’s Lemon Chicken Pasta which is my absolute fave, and then we drank wine and it was time to watch the show.

Jill’s Brain = ahhhhhhhhhh nooooooooooo gnjfgfdghjkdfhgfjdghgfjgkfjgfjdgjfdfhgjdfg

I really enjoyed watching the auditions since I felt like it was such a blur that I don’t remember anything I did or said. Luckily I acted like an excited yet normal human being, which I was pleased with.

It was also cool to see my competitors auditions as well to see how the judges reacted to trying their desserts for the first time. I may be biased but I think that my dish got the best reaction from the judges. They loved it! Tony had to calm the ladies down which was hilarious.

Then they showed our bios and I thought mine was really funny because we had no furniture. Mr.Delish also made a cameo in that part which was awesome!

Just a side note, when they filmed that segment where we are eating at the table, we had just eaten lunch, and I made that green curry seafood dish as more of a prop. I guess I didn’t realize we would actually be eating a lot of it. Anyways, it ended up being SUPER spicy and we had to continually eat it for probably 10 or 15  minutes for them to get the shots they needed. Mr. Delish and I were both laughing so hard because our mouths were on fire!

Then we did the scary part, the batch up challenge. I die, seriously. That thing made me sooo gosh darn nervous it was ridiculous. Walking into any kitchen that you are not used to is hard enough, never mind a commercial kitchen that has equipment that I’ve never used before.

It probably didn’t help that I have a psychotic, irrational fear of burning myself and the kitchen didn’t have oven mitts. Yes, I know, real chef’s use towels but I am not a real chef and I need the MITTS.

I also will just have you know that usually one batch of this recipe makes 6 servings in about one hour. I had to make 200 servings in 3 hours. The math doesn’t add up folks.

Okay the time, or lack thereof, killed my performance in the batch up challenge. I was sure I was going home after that. I really didn’t want to go home but I thought there was no way that I would be staying.

To my surprise, they eliminated Cherilynn instead! I could not believe it. Poor Cherilynn, she was such a sweetheart and she did so well. I guess her recipe wasn’t what they were looking for.

Once I came to, it was time for the Marketing challenge. NOW that was where I was going to win it all back folks. I am very interested in marketing and promotions and I was excited to hear what the experts had  to say about my product and what kind of ideas they had for me. The company I worked with was AMAZING to say the least. They were all so enthusiastic and excited to help me market my product. We ended up incorporating my blog name to come up with the name “Delish de Creme.” They also helped me come up with a pretty pink Parisian themed logo, I loved it!

We also had to brainstorm ideas for the Event and we continued with the Parisien Garden theme. As you all know by now, I also agreed to dress up as Marie Antoinette. HELLO. Let’s go back to where I said I end up acting like a goof on camera, and then regret it later. Ya, perfect example.

How did you all like my Marie Antoinette Getup?

I thought it was fun and set me apart from Jay’s rocker style.

Oh, and that HAIR. My goodness. That took forever for the stylist to do but I just sat and watched in amazement as she teased and tousled it into the Marie Antoinette style. Yes that was my real hair, not a wig.

Anyways, when the event rolled around, I had to take control and make sure all of those culinary arts students were giving me the good marks that I needed. In the end I think that really made the difference in the scores I had at the end.

Lastly, we had to stand in front of the judges and hear our fate. I didn’t know what to think and I really had no idea what was going to happen. The only thing I was thinking when I was standing up there, was how amazing the experience was and no matter what happened I was going to stay positive and keep a smile on my face.

When they announced that Jay was the winner, I was disappointed but I was very happy for him. Although the show was not just about the money, I know that Jay and his family really could have used that $25,000.  It made me feel happy for him.

My family and friends watching the show with me were super supportive and they really enjoyed watching the episode with me. Afterwards, the outpouring of wonderfully positive comments were sent to my Facebook, Twitter and email. I am still so overwhelmed at the support that I received before, during and after the show aired. I tried my best to respond back to every comment and message I received so if you haven’t heard back please resend it so I can write you back!

I always love to read your comments and messages so please send em over! Facebook  Twitter  Email me at contactmissdelish@gmail.com

I wanted to show you some photos that my friend Lani took, of the gang watching the episode. She got some really great shots!

Before I finish this lonnnngggg long post, I wanted to ask you guys some questions! Feel free to leave answers to one or more in the comments below:

1. Did you watch Season 1 of Recipe to Riches? And what did you think?

2. What is your favorite category?

3. Who did you think was going to win my episode and why?

4. Do you think I should dress like Marie Antoinette more often?

5. Why did the camera make me look like I was 7000 lbs during the interviews?

Hah ok well the last two were for fun, but if you have any insight into my double chins, I’d love to hear it.

Thank you all again for watching and reading!!

I was hoping you would win so that I could buy your dessert this week end and serve it.

So hear I am home sick today and spending the majority of the day watching the food network and saw that someone from Vancouver would be on Recipe to Riches so decided to watch & even better that “someone” YOU was from Surrey as that is where I live!!! I think you did fabulous on the show and really wish you had won, I haven’t checked out your web recipes yet but am really hoping your delish de creme is included as I can’t wait to try it. & no you didn’t look 7000 lbs. LOL – you’re a beauty and I think you’re a STAR in the making. Sending JOY your way, Margo

  3. carley October 18, 2012 at 1:15 pm #

    1) yes

    2) I liked the puddings one that season too.

    3) I thought you were… of course! Even if I didn’t know you I would think your 91% “would you recommend” score should have secured you the win.

    4) EVERYDAY!

    5) Shhhhhhhhhh! You looked so cute, and it was the camera angle… and the fact that the “intimidator” was sitting across from you trying to make you cry.

I’m sooooooooo proud of you Jilly! You made me cry happy tears throughout the whole episode. Also, I did not drink a bottle of wine, just 2 very full glasses.

    the biggest hug!

    • missdelish October 18, 2012 at 1:56 pm #

Oh Carley, you are so my #1 fan and I love it. You are THE best.

Hi! I was really disappointed that you didn’t win actually! I am hoping you are going to post your recipe so I can give it a try. And while it’s a small consulation, I am a new follower of your blog because of the show :) I wish you so much success in the future and I am excited to follow along via the blogasphere! I am a victoria girl so I was rooting twice as hard for you!

    • missdelish October 18, 2012 at 1:52 pm #

Thank you Deana! Your comments are super sweet and hearing that totally made my day. The recipe was actually one of the first things I posted on this blog about a year and a half ago! You can find it here http://miss-delish.com/chocolate-butterscotch-pot-de-creme/

Thank you so much for stopping by!

    Answers:

    1. I was hooked on season 1 of R2R. I don’t think the winner in the end should have won. There were way better finalists. Sorry Glo.
    2. Cakes, Puddings, and Pies – I personally cannot bake so I’m wowed by people that can.
    3. Hellooo that’s obvious to anyone who watched the show – YOU should have won.
    4. Yes. Hands down.
    5. Haha that is so not true.

Jill, you did an absolutely wonderful job and it was such a joy to watch it with you yesterday. This is seriously just the beginning for you – look at Clay Aitken – he was a runner up too!

    Love ya!

    • missdelish October 18, 2012 at 1:53 pm #

Bahahaha Tascha! THIS is why you are my #1 PRB

      LOVE YOU!

    • Tanya October 21, 2012 at 10:40 pm #

I agree with the “runner up” comment. Maybe it’s a jumping off point for your brand’s name in Canada. Google showed me that it has a presence in some U.S. locations.

      • missdelish October 22, 2012 at 6:29 pm #

Thanks Tanya! I hope this is just the beginning for me :)

  6. Stephanie October 18, 2012 at 1:57 pm #

Hi! I found your blog thanks to last night’s episode. I was so sure you were going to win, especially when I saw the marks after the marketing event. You should definitely dress up as Marie Antoinette more often .. as if that was your real hair!!

    • missdelish October 18, 2012 at 2:01 pm #

Hahah I am totally not lying when I say that was my real hair. I have a lot of hair so I guess she figured she could make it work :) Thank you soo much for stopping by and also watching the show and rooting for me!

  7. Graham October 18, 2012 at 2:14 pm #

In the end I do not think there was anything you could do as I think Galen makes the final choice as to what he think will sell the most in their stores. Jay had something different and they went with different in spite of the lower scores. You held your own, and I am sure you made your family and friends very proud.

    • missdelish October 18, 2012 at 2:30 pm #

I’m sure you are right! I know my family and friends are very proud!

  8. Adam October 18, 2012 at 2:24 pm #

    1. Did you watch Season 1 of Recipe to Riches? And what did you think? i did watch it and i always follow every show.

    2. What is your favorite category? Desserts hehehehehe

    3. Who did you think was going to win my episode and why? i thought it was you that was going to win, your dessert looked amazing. i find that too bad that you have to make such a big batch of them and they dont let you enough time. if your ramakins would of been white and not see through. they would not of seen that it leaked down since it did not have enough time to chill.

    4. Do you think I should dress like Marie Antoinette more often? nope, we are in 2012

    5. Why did the camera make me look like I was 7000 lbs during the interviews? we all know that the camera gives us extra pounds dont worry about that.

    • Adam October 18, 2012 at 2:25 pm #

honestly you should of own. i was so disapointed that you did not win.

      • missdelish October 18, 2012 at 2:32 pm #

        Aww thanks Adam!

    • missdelish October 18, 2012 at 2:32 pm #

Haha! I agree on the Marie Antoinette thing! Especially because I think I would need a new bottle of hair spray every day for that “do”

Thanks for visiting my blog and I am so glad you were cheering me on!!

  9. deborah October 18, 2012 at 2:38 pm #

Loved season 1, but think Glo won because of the Grandma factor.
I found your wesite because of the show -that makes me the winner!!!!
I will make the crunchy chick pea quinoa tomorrow. Looks great.
Your dessert was the winner – but with the website and “brand” name you looked pretty professional and I think that did you in.

    • missdelish October 18, 2012 at 2:47 pm #

That is so sweet! I am so glad you found my blog too. Let me know how you like the Quinoa, that is my new favorite dish!

      • deborah October 20, 2012 at 6:16 am #

Loved the Quinoa with crunchy chick peas. I used smoked paprika on the peas ( suddenly out of cumin – how does that happen?). They were sooooo good, I think I will make them again & add to salads. I didn’t blanch the green beans – just cut them smaller than the peppers & zucc.
Woneful dish, and not something I have had before. Thx

        • missdelish October 21, 2012 at 6:48 pm #

So glad you liked it, Deborah! The chickpeas are my new favorite thing too!

  10. Suz October 18, 2012 at 3:58 pm #

Jillian!!! I found your blog because of the show and your experiences with it. I believe you will have wonderful exposure from this but that it will also open up new opportunities for you as a writer and also in the food creation business.

You were professional and did everything right.

I am excited to see your next steps and where all of this leads you. Everything happens for a reason..

    Best wishes! Maureen

I was so looking forward to trying that desert in store this weekend!!
Good luck in all your future endeavors

      Thank you so much Joanne!

  14. Mike October 18, 2012 at 5:59 pm #

Just watched the show with my wife and we both agreed your dessert looked and sounded better – look at the reaction you got from the ladies during auditions. I agree with Graham’s comments that Galen chose different (Innovation was his term) versus tried and true. Congratulations for making it so far in the competition. The show led me to your blog / website and as a foodie myself I will check in for updates frequently.

    Cheers.

    • missdelish October 19, 2012 at 10:13 am #

Thanks Mike, It’s so nice to hear that so many people were at home cheering me on! I am just really glad you found my blog!

  15. Catherine October 18, 2012 at 7:42 pm #

I just finished watching your episode and you were AWESOME! I thoroughly enjoyed all of your segments and was hoping you’d win as I wanted to try your dessert this weekend. Guess I’ll have to follow your link above and try making it.

I was happy for Jay too as he seems to have been through so much and hopefully this will help them a lot but when it comes to what I wanted to buy at the store, your recipe was it!

You were a treat to watch and so gracious when Jay was announced the winner. Hold your head high Jill! You did wonderfully and I believe this is just the beginning of a whole new opportunity for you.

    Catherine – a new blog follower :o)

    • missdelish October 19, 2012 at 10:15 am #

Wow, thank you so much Catherine. I really appreciate your thoughtful comments. I am a very positive person and I always try to look for the best in the situation. In this case, the show allowed me to talk to so many lovely people like you!

  16. Jean October 18, 2012 at 8:06 pm #

I watched with my boys and we all thought you would win (even though we were cheering all 3 of you on) and happy that you have the recipe on the site, we will be making it for sure this weekend. I’ve added your blog to my favourites…you have a lot of great stuff here. Good for you for taking the chance and going for it. I’d totally choke in the batch up contest. Wayyyyy to much pressure.

    • missdelish October 19, 2012 at 10:18 am #

Thanks Jean! Please let me know how you like them, they were a family favorite in my house long before the show!

  17. Doug & Nancy Beglaw October 18, 2012 at 8:26 pm #

Oh Jill – Doug and I were just so inspired to see you on the show. I mean, who gets the opportunity to do that. We were watching you, feeling so proud of you!! I had everyone we knew watching it. Even my Mom called ater it was done. Good for you for getting through that far. And, believe me, I told everyone that you had already made those yummy morsels for us earlier in the year. We were as proud of you as if you were our own kid!!

    • missdelish October 19, 2012 at 10:19 am #

NANCY AND DOUG! Yay, I am so glad you were watching. It was quite the experience and I was so lucky to be a part of it!

  18. Mona October 18, 2012 at 10:07 pm #

    Hey there,
I am a HUGE fan of the show and follow it very closely. I think you did a great job on the show – however, my honest opinion is that there are many pots de creme, or ‘creme brulee’ desserts out there – having something different, in my opinion, is always nice. Nevertheless, your dessert sounded delicious and you should be so proud that you made it!

    • missdelish October 19, 2012 at 10:21 am #

Thanks Mona, I think a lot of people thought that mine was maybe too much like some other products out there. Which may be true. I just think from a business standpoint the numbers show it all!

  19. Aggie McEathron October 19, 2012 at 3:16 pm #

    Hi Miss Delish
I am not in the habit of watching reality tv, but I did watch last season of Recipe to Riches. I can tell you from my knowledge training and experience that you should have won. that being said I am going to follow your blog, and hopefully someday we will see a cookbook from you. By the way, naming the dessert after you was brilliant. I hope you incorporate it into everything you do. as Imentioned in my original email I am on a diet with about 20 coworkers and I am near the top in the lead, and when it ends will be the one thing I want the very most. Good luck in everything you do.
By the way I am not a Superstore Shopper, but that is another story. Have not set foot in one for years. But I would have gone in to vote for you and support you.

    • missdelish October 20, 2012 at 10:43 pm #

Wow thank you so much, Aggie! Your comments are so sweet and thoughtful and I hope you know how much your support means to me!

  20. Pat Massier October 19, 2012 at 4:33 pm #

I really enjoyed last year and bought every product. Glo’s was the best in my opinion because it didn’t taste synthetic. I thought you would win this session because I think your pot would probably taste quite authentic. I usually use the straight chocolate version but will try your recipe the next time I make this type of dessert. I find that frozen peach desserts taste a little like, well, frozen peach desserts so while your competition was different I don’t expect it to wow me when I buy it and try it this weekend. The prize will go to good use, though.
We are leaving for our home in the south in 10 days so will only be able to try 2 products this year plus won’t be able to see the episodes, but I will be able to follow your blog.
    Keep it up.

    • missdelish October 20, 2012 at 10:45 pm #

Hi Pat! Thank you for stopping by and leaving such nice feedback! This whole experience has been amazing and honestly the best part for me has been meeting and talking to so many wonderful people like you. Enyoy your time down south!

  21. Janet October 20, 2012 at 8:58 am #

I thought it was a tough decision for the judges. Most of all I thought you were extremely gracious. Congratulations. You are wonderful and I hope taste your wonderful looking dessert sometimes soon! I wish all three of you could have won.

    • missdelish October 20, 2012 at 10:41 pm #

Thank you Janet! It means a lot to me that you were rooting for all of us! I always try to stay positive and look on the bright side of things.

  22. Kyla October 20, 2012 at 4:15 pm #

I work at a Real Canadian Superstore, and I watched as much as I could last season. They had it playing constantly on Food Network on our staff tv. I work as a cashier, so I see what people buy, and what they are willing to try. I have been with the company 14 years so I also think I’m pretty good at guessing what things will stay and what will go.
From the get go I figured the cake would not last past first round. too much “prep” for what will more than likely be a frozen item, all but one last season were frozen items. The jam and marzipan and details wouldn’t survive well being frozen, then thawed, or cooked afterwards, so I was pretty sure it would come down to you and the pastry guy, simply because both were items that would be easily marketable and manufactured on a big scale. If you had won, I doubt it would have been a frozen dessert, it more likely would have been refrigerated, and added to the line they already have of the custards sold in two packs in the glass ramkins. Creme brulee and a chocolate mouse if I remember right.
Don’t be surprised if your recipe still ends up in production, I’m sure they have to credit you somehow, it just won’t be part of the “recipe to riches” line, but could still show up in the PC line somewhere.
I would have loved to try your recipe, and I may still do so, but make it myself!
I do see why his was chosen, based on a product that can be made in mass production. I’ve learned a little about what kind of products the PC line does in 14 years! lol.
    Congrats on making the show!

    • missdelish October 20, 2012 at 10:52 pm #

Hi Kyla! Thank you for all that information, you definitely sound like you have experience with this type of thing and I really appreciate you taking the time to write me!!

  23. Ann October 21, 2012 at 10:40 am #

You were a lovely and gracious contestant on the show, and from the judges’ reactions to your dessert, I knew I had to try it. Thank you for the recipe and much success to you in the future.

    • missdelish October 21, 2012 at 1:50 pm #

Thank you so much for your sweet comments! I am so glad you were cheering me on!!

  24. Germaine October 21, 2012 at 6:25 pm #

You were amazing on the show, and you should feel supercharged about yourself, I do. There must be better things coming for you,
but just keep doing what you’re doing. I loved you in the Marie
gown, it must have felt good to be so pampered. Let them eat creme de pot! You looked great on TV, and it should you have a great body to be proud of too! Enjoy your life and do everything you want to do. Time goes too fast.
Love and prayers to you and your family,\
    Germaine

    • missdelish October 21, 2012 at 6:45 pm #

Hi Germaine, thank you so much for taking the time to send me a comment! I’m glad you liked the show and found my blog!

  25. Jamie October 21, 2012 at 9:13 pm #

    1. Yes. Really enjoyed it especially a Canadian show.
    2. Appetizers and desserts
    3. you or the other guy.
    4. maybe try someone else lol
    5. gravity is a bitch

i was wondering what the time line was from start to finish on the set. i.e. waiting for auditions and/or screening, auditions, the first challenge – batch-up, the marketing challenge and the final decision. Over 1 day or many days?

Good 4 U for being brave enough to go on tv!!!

    • missdelish October 21, 2012 at 9:35 pm #

Thanks for answering Jamie! The audition was back in February and that was just one day and then as far as filming goes it was over 3 days in total.

  26. Tanya October 21, 2012 at 10:30 pm #

Yes, I loved season one, I liked the excuse to buy treats from the grocery store.

Desserts were my favorite. I bought last year’s peach cake and lemon pudding for important and serious taste tests.

I thought it was a toss-up. My mom and I thought you had it made, the way the judges seemed to want to lap up yours. But after we considered last year’s success with the chicken grenades, we thought the cheesy tarts had an edge.

Do you dress in costume a lot? Did you attend this year’s renaissance faire? (B.C. Renaissance Festival actually. It was in Langley) Anyway, you looked fabulous and really showed some moxy.

As for your last question, ask yourself what you see when you look at others. Smile? Cute sweater? Shining hair? Vivacious personality? I don’t know if I would be able to completely trust an extremely skinny food blogger anyway 😉

    • missdelish October 22, 2012 at 6:31 pm #

Thanks for taking the time to comment and answer my questions. I am just so glad you were watching! Thank you for stopping by!

    • missdelish October 24, 2012 at 7:02 am #

Hi Liz! Thank you so much for watching me on Recipe to Riches! I love that you came by and found my blog too. Not sure what my next idea will be but I am always open to new opportunities!
